What Are Braces?
Braces are orthodontic tools attached to the teeth to shift them into place. Braces consist of brackets attached to the tooth enamel and wires between the brackets. Braces FAQ
How long do you have to wear braces?
Typically, patients who wear braces will have them for 12 months to 24 months. Your Orthodontist will give you an estimate when you get braces.
How can you tell if you need braces?
There are many signs that a person needs braces. For example, you may notice that your teeth don’t line up, or your jaw clicks when you chew. You might have difficulty pronouncing certain words, or your jaw might get tired after eating for a while.
The best way to find out if you need braces is to talk to an orthodontist. Your Orthodontic professional at Trimmell, Anders, and White Orthodontics can tell you if you’re a good candidate for braces.
Can you get braces as an adult?
Braces can be installed on your teeth as an adult. Many people who did not get braces as a child will turn to adult braces to achieve their goals for their smile.
Getting braces as an adult is a great way to improve your smile and achieve the results you’ve always wanted. If you’re worried about the effect that braces will have on your appearance, talk to your orthodontist. There are many things you can do to make braces more subtle. For example, ceramic brackets and white wires are very subtle.
Do you have to follow a special diet if you have braces?
Braces can be easily damaged by certain types of food. Tough bread, crunchy candy, sticky caramel, and similar foods can all damage your braces.
While you don’t have to follow a special diet for your braces, you may need to avoid certain foods while you’re wearing braces. Your Orthodontist can provide you with a list of foods that you should either avoid or take special care when eating.
How are braces maintained?
Braces need to be brushed and flossed regularly to maintain healthy teeth and gums. Use a soft-bristle toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste to clean your teeth with braces.
In addition, floss your teeth regularly. Flossing with braces is very different from flossing without braces. Your Orthodontist will have to show you how to floss properly to ensure your teeth stay clean.
Are there any alternatives to braces?
There are some alternatives to braces. The severity of your condition will affect whether these alternatives are right for you. Many people turn to clear aligners for mild to moderate tooth misalignment. If you have severe crowding in your mouth, your Orthodontist may recommend a combination of braces and other interventions, like tooth extraction.
Every patient is different. You’ll find out from your Orthodontist what options are right for you when you go in for your first appointment.
Are the effects of braces permanent?
Once the braces have done their job, most patients wear a retainer for a period of time after the braces come off. The goal of wearing a retainer is to help keep the teeth in place.
The retainer helps the teeth “retain” the new positioning. Your orthodontist at Trimmell, Anders, & White Orthodontics will help you decide how long the retainer will be necessary.
